Sukhasana (Easy Seat)
(soo-KAHS-uh-nuh)
Easy Seat (Sukasana) is a basic yoga pose depicted in some of the oldest images of ancient yogis more than 2,000 years ago. Sometimes called “Simple Cross-Legged Pose”, Sukhasana is intended to be comfortable and calming, a reimagining of our posture in a new and more beneficial way.
Benefits
Calms the brain
Strengthens the back
Stretches the knees and ankles
Directions
Sit on the edge of a firm folded blanket. Extend your legs in front of your body and sit up straight
in Seated Staff Pose (Dandasana). Then, cross your legs at the shins.
Draw your knees wide, place each foot beneath the opposite knee.
Place your hands on your knees, palms down to feel grounded or up to feel energized.
Balance your weight evenly across your sit bones. Align your head, neck, and spine. Gaze straight ahead with soft eyes.
Hold for up to one minute or for the duration of your meditation or pranayama practice.
Release and change the cross of your legs.
Modifications
Sit on a block, blanket or bolster to lift hips above knees
For more back support, sit with your back against a wall and place a yoga block between the wall and your shoulder blades
